The Jackie Joyner-Kersee (JJK) Food, Agriculture, Nutrition (FAN) Innovation Center is a unique collaboration between the JJK Foundation, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and Lansdowne UP. Each organization provides assets that together amplify our ability to provide educational and professional development programming in agriculture, STEAM, food innovation, nutrition, physical activity, and entrepreneurialism to youth and community in East St. Louis and beyond. Staff from each organization are housed on-site and work together to deliver curriculum and trainings for participants of all ages.
OUR Purpose
Changing lives by providing quality youth and community programs in STEAM+Ag, food production, nutrition, and physical activity in ESTL and beyond.
We have a sneak peek into a special project of the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Food Agriculture and Nutrition Innovation Center (JJK FAN). We are in the process of building a 100-meter (330 ft. x 60 ft.) passive solar greenhouse. It will be the first of its kind built in the United States! This unique greenhouse has the capacity to produce 30,000 lbs. of food/year at $1/day (electric cost)! Lansdowne UP’s Grow UP and Build UP workforce teams are instrumental in the construction of this greenhouse which will be used for research and food production aimed to combat food insecurity in East St. Louis and beyond.
At the heart of the vision for this partnership is the youth of East St. Louis and the desire to create a national model of excellence that can be widely replicated.
